The Best Brown Sugars

WholesomeSweetners

With the baking season upon us, we will be bringing you lots of home baking ideas.  Brown sugar is a key ingredient in many baked goods, so I wanted to highlight two of the best brown sugars in the marketplace:  Wholesome Sweeteners and India Tree.

For my own baking, I can no longer bring myself to buy that old standard, Domino. For me, the extra money for a better brown sugar is totally worth it. These brown sugars have more of the molasses still intact than other brands.  More molasses makes for rich, deep flavors. Other brown sugars just don’t compare. Try a bag and see for your self.

Here is a great recipe that illustrates the yumminess of these brown sugars:

Better for you Banana Bundt Cake

¼ cup bran
¼ wheat germ
¼ cup flax meal
½ tsp. baking powder
¾ tsp. baking soda
½ tsp. salt
1 cup dark brown sugar
½ cup canola oil
2 Eggs (3, if high altitude)
3 mashed over-ripe bananas

¼ cup buttermilk
½ cup nuts, such as chopped walnuts (optional)

1.  Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.  Blend together the flour, bran, wheat germ, flax meal, baking powder, baking soda and salt.

2.   Mix together the brown sugar and oil.  Add eggs, one at a time.  Mix in the bananas and buttermilk.

3.   Add the dry ingredients, a cup at a time, mixing until fully incorporated.  If using, fold in nuts.

4.   Pour batter into a a greased and floured bundt pan.  Bake for 45 to 50 minutes, until a cake tester comes out clean.  Cool 10- 15 minutes in the pan before turning out cake onto a wire rack to finish cooling.
